The overall function and beauty of the kitchen. I cook and bake a lot. For a small kitchen, I like the balance of open (easy access) and closed shelving in the space. The high-quality countertop, appliances, and fixtures make it a joy (aesthetically and otherwise) to be in a work in this kitchen. cool marble countertop is a visual joy (everyday it brings me joy) and a perfect surface for working dough.
Thomas Street Market. Every neighborhood needs a Thomas Street Market – you can literally be there and back in 5 minutes. Not only does it have a robust wine and beer selection, but you can get just about anything needed in a pinch. Huge bonus: They have excellent deli sandwiches.
Walkability and access to public transport. Walking to work, to the dentist, doctors/urgent care, hair stylist, library, food shopping, shoe repair, frame shop, art shop, farmers market, cinemas, live music/shows, restaurants, bank, hardware, bike repair, clothing and furniture stores…just about everything! Also, the Light Rail is a five-minute walk and three different bus lines are just outside the door.
The beauty and interest of the cork floor. I find myself often thinking about the random colors, textures, and shapes that Mother Nature puts together for us to enjoy in these beautiful, functional floors.
The handles on the refrigerator, entry closet, and drawers in the bathroom. I love touching them and looking at them. I appreciate the beauty and feel of these handles.
The balcony (and the birds who visit there). Being up a bit from the fray of the city while remaining in the city is a real joy. I love being able to go outside into a private space and using the balcony as an extension of the living space. It’s high enough off the ground that the sliders can be left open in the summer to keep cool. The added dark sun blinds also help regulate temperatures of the inside, while doubling for privacy. I’ll also miss the additional storage, using the retractable clothesline and sipping morning coffee at the fold up table.
Built-in drawers and a well-structured closet. The custom drawers and cabinet in the bathroom help keep things organized, while preserving a lot of bathroom space. You don’t have to navigate a cramped small apartment bathroom here; it’s a proper-sized bathroom. Similarly, the custom closet in the bedroom keeps things organized and is nice to look at (as storage spaces go).
Energy-efficient appliances and wall heaters. All appliances were selected for their high quality and energy efficiency (and they look nice too). The Bosch, counter-depth (paneled) fridge will be especially missed!
Induction stove top. This is the first time I used an induction stove, and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with it. Cooking on it and cleaning it is better than gas. I’ll never accept cooking on an electric stovetop again!
Soaking tub. It’s super comfortable and aesthetically appealing to boot. Taking the stress off the day relaxing in the tub will be surely missed.
